This well known LOC photo taken during the Battle of Nashville appears fairly uninteresting until viewed up close. Under magnification the scene comes alive. The Federal works are a regular ant colony of troops engaged in all sorts of camp activities. Also interesting are the chimneys remaining where rude winter quarters have been broken down. A unique view of Federals in the field.

Nice image-cropping. I don't think I saw a single soldier who wasn't in a greatcoat.

Here you go. That may be Granny While Pike you see crossing the earthworks just above the house. If so, Thomas HQ was on the hill.

This is a lot like the image of the man on the hill at antietam, although you notice the artillary behind him, a whole line of men jump out at you once you blow up the image to the front of him...thanks

I am reminded of the opening scene in Gladiator where you see the entire Roman army arrayed out behind chevaux-de-frise and siege engines. Super image, particularly blown-up.
Say, what is everyone using to enhance these images? You could rediscover the whole LOC collection with PhotoShop or whatever. There was a thread a while back concerning enlarged images of Confederate dead around Fort Mahone. Best thread I ever read on this forum. Is this lost or was it restored?Bob Muehleisen

I'm no computer expert but if you have Microsoft 7.0 you should be able to do it. First save your picture. Then click on it and go to "File" menu. Click on "Open With" and then click on "Picture It." You can then crop or do lots of other edit tricks. Well ok,
not a line of battle (bad choice of words), but if it looks like at least several companies or a battallion, at rest in line with several officers on horse back..When this photo is mentioned these men never come up, and I just think its a very interesting snap shot of a "unposed" large body of men...thanks
