This well known LOC photo taken during the Battle of Nashville appears fairly uninteresting until viewed up close. Under magnification the scene comes alive. The Federal works are a regular ant colony of troops engaged in all sorts of camp activities. Also interesting are the chimneys remaining where rude winter quarters have been broken down. A unique view of Federals in the field.

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th LouisianaTags: None

Re: Not-So-Empty earthworks
Nice image-cropping. I don't think I saw a single soldier who wasn't in a greatcoat.
How's the resolution down the line near the white house?Paul Calloway

Re: Not-So-Empty earthworks
Here you go. That may be Granny While Pike you see crossing the earthworks just above the house. If so, Thomas HQ was on the hill.
[CORRECTION: After further research I believe that to be the Franklin Pike with Blockhouse Casino in the background. Maybe one of you locals can impart some knowledge].Last edited by roundshot; 04-28-2007, 02:35 PM.Bob Williams

Re: Not-So-Empty earthworks
This is a lot like the image of the man on the hill at antietam, although you notice the artillary behind him, a whole line of men jump out at you once you blow up the image to the front of him...thanks

Re: Not-So-Empty earthworks
Sorry,
having trouble uploading the images, but if you find the image, its worth examining closely, looks like a whole battle line in front of the hill the man is on..thanks

Re: Not-So-Empty earthworks
I am reminded of the opening scene in Gladiator where you see the entire Roman army arrayed out behind chevaux-de-frise and siege engines. Super image, particularly blown-up.
Say, what is everyone using to enhance these images? You could rediscover the whole LOC collection with PhotoShop or whatever. There was a thread a while back concerning enlarged images of Confederate dead around Fort Mahone. Best thread I ever read on this forum. Is this lost or was it restored?Bob Muehleisen

Re: Not-So-Empty earthworks
I'm no computer expert but if you have Microsoft 7.0 you should be able to do it. First save your picture. Then click on it and go to "File" menu. Click on "Open With" and then click on "Picture It." You can then crop or do lots of other edit tricks. Here's the Antietam photo Milliron mentioned, but the "line of battle" is just a bunch of guys lazing around and cooking.Last edited by roundshot; 04-28-2007, 02:35 PM.Bob Williams

Re: Not-So-Empty earthworks
Well ok,
not a line of battle (bad choice of words), but if it looks like at least several companies or a battallion, at rest in line with several officers on horse back..When this photo is mentioned these men never come up, and I just think its a very interesting snap shot of a "unposed" large body of men...thanks
