  • Unique Fortification

This close up from the LOC collection provides an extraordinary view of the Federal siege parallels on Morris Island and one of it's most unusual features, the Surf Battery. In the foreground can be seen the First Parallel with Battery Reynolds on the right and the Naval Battery on the left. Beyond this line is the Second Parallel which is anchored on its right by the Surf Battery. This unique fortification (seen above Battery Reynolds) was built on top of a crib work located at the low water mark. Fitted with two howitzers, it was positioned to block any attack along the beach. At high tide, the Surf battery was completely surrounded by water. In this photo it looms over the water like a big old fishing pier or gambling casino.

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

Very nice find as well as design. The blindages are well fortified and I think this a rememdy to the north's lack of long distance concentration of large artillery on waterways.
