I think that I can see a faint outline just to the left of the colored buttons that the belt straddles. This is a retouched photograph and perhaps the buckle was painted over. I would have to see the original or a close-up scan.Comment

Yes, I think I see it also now that you pointed it out. I believe it is an 1839 "baby" US buckle that the 79th had. That would explain the small buckle size.Comment
