This interesting image was for sale on ebay, sorry lost the link, the hats appear to be dress hats with the brims cut down, note the ribbon just barely visible on the hat of the fellow on the left.

Along the same lines, here is an image of a field modified army hat, modified t make it shorter in the crown. What is so odd about this you ask, well the fellow didn't just telescope it like many of us are apt to do, he cut the bad boy off and then crudely stitiched the top back on.
I viewed this original at the Nashville show last year. One of my very own Franken-relics.
