The dapper civilian in the foreground of this LOC photograph of a Washington fort gives new meaning to the term "shifty-eyed."

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

Are his pants and vest a different size check, or is it my imagination? Is that a cigar in his right hand?

The poor guy on the front right of the squad of four must have had a rough time marching with feet like that. Looks like he could have used some orthopedic brogans. I think I might have found my new civilian impression though.

That same fellow in the group of four must have gotten tired holding his weapon at shoulder arms. Take a look at his right hand.

Yes, I think that after shaking hands with him one had best count their fingers.

I also wonder if the two checks are two different colors. I'm saying yes, but for us it's just a guess, I reckon.

I'd definitely wear some sturdy gloves if called on to shake hands. hehehe

Hmmmm, a fort around Washington. Is shifty a politician, arms dealer, or a "salesman" of unspeakable trades? It's a great look!

Such an enigmatic grin! Kind of eerie.

Actually, a couple of people seem to be grinning. Perhaps it's a sardonic response to the mud they're all standing in.

                    Comrades,

What I like about this image is that it's an artillery unit that has also been traines infantry. Interesting to see them wearing the jacket while wearing infantry accoutrements. Normally, a heavy artillery unit would be wearing a frock or a sack coat..

Also, check out the insignia on the collar of the fellow on the left with the frock.

And just to the left od him, the kid in the middle with the forage cap with a "baseball cap" brim... heh... what a farb, eh?

However, anyone wanting to see the marked difference between a proper enlisted impression and an officer impression need look no further than this image. The "comrades in battle" with their rifle-muskets are of an entirely different class, clothing and appearance-wise, from the officer on the right with his white gloves and patent leather belt.

                    Respects,

Can we get the url for the photo? I have searched the LOC using the key words Washington and fort, and came up with nothing.

I believe they are wearing them on their belts. You can see the rear rank fellow has his on the cb belt, and the way the front right man's belt is hanging looks like his cb is on his belt.

Snidely almost looks photoshoped in, Look how much brighter his figure is compared to the others, Look at his boots also, No mud on them compared to everybody else's. I would think he would have mud on them as deep as it looks in the picture! Great image if it is real though! I love this stuff!
