  • greatcoat and knapsack

I was trying to do research but came up empty. Does anybody have an original photo of a soldier wearing a greatcoat and knapsack at the same time. Never thought about it, but I have never seen one.

What type of conclusion are you looking at? Are you just trying to see if soldiers had their portraits taken wearing both knapsacks and greatcoats? How they wore their greatcoat while wearing the knapsack? Etc?

I hope this one uploads here, there is no ID.

I liked to see how they wore them. I never saw one for some reason. Thank you for that image.

I see a haversack and canteen but no straps across the chest. Are they both over his left shoulder? Or attached to his belt or knapsack straps perhaps? Almost looks like the haversack strap around his waist behind his belt. Interesting.

They are most likely acrossed the right shoulder, but under the cape of the coat.

Is that just me, or is that bayonet monstrous?
What type of gun is that?

Stephen, that is a "sword" style bayonet, used on the (in this case) .70 Model 1853 "Tige" rifle, which was likely made in Belgium for France.

                Thanks...
I think it was how low the bayonet hung from that frog that made it look bigger than it actually was

I was thinking the same thing. I know the sword bayonets are larger, but it dstood out immediately to me as well.

                    Re: greatcoat and knapsack

                    Hallo!

For convenience, I took the liberty to post the image directly:

Yes, the straps are "concealed" by the cape of the greatcoat being buttoned closed.
The image is reversed, so things appear on the "wrong" side.
And, likely the bayonet was slid around to be more visible in the image.

(As an unrelated aside, for a spell I used a Cook & Brother rifle with sabre bayonet. IMHO, they are a 'nuisance" even when worn right on the side/hip. Plus even at my height of 5' 10" I was always digging the tip of the scabbard into the ground when I tried to sit or squat.... ;-) :-) )

I don't think it makes sense that he has his pack straps crossed under the buttoned cape. They would have to be crossed over the cape woudn't they? The cape would not lay flat if he had them crossed. I think they are either strapped to his belt, or , like me, he took them off altogether.
