My Ancestor from the 11th GA Inf.

This is a photograph of my Great-Great-Great Grandfather, Zachariah Bullock Tate.
Could someone identify his jacket, (what depot, etc.)?

I am no expert on jackets, especially confederate, but the epalettes lead me to believe it looks like a North Carolina Sack. Although, with what appears to be numerous buttons, Id lean more toward maybe NC Jacket. And then Ill round my final educated guess of maybe a commutation jacket (cant be too wrong with this one)

It looks very similar to jackets that were issued early in the War to Alabama troops; however, it's possible it was procured under the commutation system. Best regards.

It isn't a North Carolina '61 warrant coat.

No...it is in an old farming community cemetery. The community disappeared after the depression, and the cemetery was semi-maintained by my family until my Great-Grandmother became to old......I have tried to do what I can, but there are about 150 graves there............

I also had an ancestor in the 11th Ga. He probably joined in the summer of 61 when most of the men of the 11th were uniformed in a shell jacket with the black collar and shoulder trim. He would have also had black trim running lengthwise along the end of the sleeve with three buttons attached. Most had slash pockets on each breast. If you can look at a book called "Portraits of Conflict- Georgia" you will see many photos of men wearing this style jacket. I plan on showing up at Tyler event, OLd Washington and Liendo. If you go, I can bring it to show you.

Could be a militia style jacket, not sure when your grandfather joined? Just a guess.

It looks to be of a very common style seen on Georgia troops. It is a jacket with scalloped trim on the cuffs.

I believe he joined in April of 61'...but not sure......
