  • Grave Photo

I just picked up this CDV this weekend because it was cheap and I was curious. There's no name on the grave, just the name on the CDV of a Philadelphia photographer.

Would this be to remember a deceased family member?
An advertisement for a tombstone maker?

Difficult to say without seeing a better scan of the photo.

However, one thing to keep in mind is that period tombstone carvers were not shy about advertising on their wares. I live near a cemetery dating back to the 1840's and have noted several period markers with "ads" plainly visible underneath the main inscriptions. If you look closely even on those post-CW zinc markers, you'll see the names of the producing firms tastefully inscribed on them.
