Re: Confederate prisoners and Union soldiers together

That is in the general vicinity, if not the same location. Unfortunely due to reflecting sunlight off clouds, haze, etc. ( which is a common occurence around Lookout Mtn.) you can't see the mountain. It would be over the far left 0f the "terminal". I wish I had the capacity here, to enlarge aspects of that photo, like the original poster did.

      Some closeups:

I think we can all agree that these ARE Confederates. :-)

        Nice pics.

I would agree that most of the guys in these close-ups are rebs. Some exceptions of course.

Nice view of the soldier with his arm in a sling...wearing canteen and haversack.

        Digital photography is great!

Yes, I think the majority of the guys on the right side of the photo are Yanks.

          2 questions though:

Is the guy on the left holding a crutch? Also, what is the guy on the right holding in his hand? It looks like the machinehead of an instrument (although it seems highly unlikely because the rest of this "instrument" is nowhere to be found).

Actually my first instinct of the above shot is that the guy on the left is holding a rifle. It's about the right height, it looks like there could be a sling on it, and he would be holding his hands on the top end of the barrel, just like you're not supposed to do. I'm not confident that that's what the object is....but that's a thought to digest, anyway.

It looks to me like a canteen in the left hand, the spout pointing toward him perhaps.

What program are you using to get the closeups? They look great.

Just regular ol' Microsoft Paint that comes with Windows. I'm just downloading the high-res photo and then I open it with paint and just select a section I want, copy it, then paste it as a new image.

These photos and the discussion around them are great. There is so much to discover- from uniform peculiarities to the faces of the soldiers. What strikes me as well is the fact that the photos do not seem as "staged" as other photographs- while, of course, some men are posing for the camera, most just do what they are doing. Thanks for posting the pictures!

These pictures are wonderful and should help many with their Western fed impressions. Also interesting in the latter photo of Johnnies is the presence of an awful lot of "hillbilly" type slouches, which are so frowned upon by many in the hobby. Thanks for posting....

I wonder if those smiles are coincdence; i.e. he happened to be lauhging at a joke, or if he is genuinely smiling for the picture. he is looking dead on at the camera it appears. The guy squatting in the frock on the foruth enlared photo looks liek he's smiling too... It doesn't look like this is a very candid photo.

I'd imagine that because of the exposure time they'd more than likely be smiling for the picture, because as you said, they are looking at the camera.

This Image could be from any war, any time. Soldiers doing what soldiers do.. talking to each other, talking to a woman, and following the old maxim, "Sleep when you can" Shoot, I have images from my deployment that could almost match this one. Why were the soldiers in the image tired? Three years in the field can do that to ya!:wink_smil
