1st post on AC...what great reading! The attention to detail is astounding!

I can only comment that my ancestor Richard Louis Cates of the 28th NC was captured that day (14 July) at Falling Waters. If these gents ended up in Point Lookout, he may have seen them because that is where he ended up.

This site has an image of Thomas Jefferson Baldwin as an elderly man, he is purported to be the man in the center, the younger man is said to be the son of the older man to the right.

I was discussing this thread with a friend of mine last weekend while we were at a living history at Gettysburg. Below you will find the service records for each man mentioned in this thread with ID's sorted by post number.

Andrew Z. Blevins...there are no men of this exact name who served in any NC regiment but there is one "Andrew Blevins," a 21 year old who died in June 1863. Clearly not the guy. Here is where it gets interesting though. There are a total of FIFTEEN men with the surname Blevins who served in the 37th NC Infantry, fourteen of whom were members of Co. K (see above entry for Ephriam Blevins), one in Co. B, and all from the same county. Going through their individual records only one man stands out in particular and he is...

Alfred C. Blevins: Residence Ashe County NC; 29 years old. Enlisted on 8/15/1862 at Iredell County, NC as a Private. On 8/15/1862 he mustered into "K" Co. NC 37th Infantry. He was Surrendered on 4/9/1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA

* Wounded 7/1/1863 Gettysburg, PA (Wounded in the right thigh)
* Returned 10/15/1863 (place not stated)
* Wounded 5/23/1864 Jericho Mills, VA (Wounded in the left hand)
* Returned 8/15/1864 (place not stated)

There is a clear discrepancy in the record for Alfred C. Blevins in that how could he have been reduced in the ranks to private in August 1863 if he was clearly absent from the regiment from around the time of Gettysburg? Retro-active reduction to ranks for disobeying orders? Did he refuse to join his regiment after he was wounded? Apparently his wound was slight if he returned afterward. How did he return if he was captured? Did he escape? Perhaps the record of his capture/parole is lost? If the identifications are correct this image may be one heck of a strange family portrait.

There appears to be some documents and photographs related to the Blevinses and Baldwin on Ancestry.com but I am not a member. From what I can tell the materials are from a number of descendents. There's some documents relating to John R. Baldwin as well as a photograph of his home in Lansing, North Carolina, taken after the war.

Some more information about the men. Andrew Z. (Zecheriah) Blevins was born in Ashe Co. North Carolina in 1800 which must disprove that ID claim; there is simply no way that guy in the image is 63 years old. Alfred C. Blevins was born in 1832 to a James Blevins but it's not known if James and Andrew Z. were brothers or some other relation. Ephraim Blevins was born in late 1842 to Andrew Z.

Maybe someone with a membership to Ancestry.com can look into this further?

In each colorized image the uniforms are tinted a bit differently, grey and brown.

Hallo!

Perhaps a "good" thing they did not colorize the lad on the left (viewer's right) into a blue gray British Army cloth Tait or RD uniform.
