I'm talking about the guy with the head that is barely above the other guys' shoulders. He's got to be under 5 feet tall.

          Hi,

That guy is really short, I measured my musket and he is close to five feet tall.

He's at MOST five feet tall. I don't see how he could wield a musket in combat.

              Hi,

I completely agree, he would would have a whole lot of problems loading. I would also think he would have problems getting a uniform that fit. As a soldier said in the war, the uniforms were too big, too small or just did not fit at all.

                Ryan,

Oh ok, now I see him.... Yeah, he's short.

I've reenacted with a guy who seemed to be that short (MacDaddy), and he worked out just fine.

Fascinating and quite educational. The mix of arms, and various accouterments askew really can blow some experts out of the proverbial water. Not that I have, but the sock bloused trousers, gaiters, location of cups, etc lend us to the more we find out, the less we know.
Realizing as well that this is but one limited example of one regiment, of one campaign, during one time, and easily not the mass norm of the Federal Army, it is nonetheless food for further research and documentation for the greater good.

"Oh, my plate you mean?" says the corporal; "that stands for Ohio Visiting Mississippi. We had a few made on purpose for this campaign."

After further scrutiny, I think there are some McDowell caps, and some kepis in there too...

With the technology of the time in respect to photography, how did this image not blur with people that seem to be doing activities? Unless the image maker yelled "freeze at what you are doing for 7 seconds"... hmm. Can someone explain this to me?
Since necessary exposure time is related to the intensity of the light (brightness), I'd guess that despite of the lack of distinct shadows it was a bright enough day to use a fast "shutter speed."

Re: Rare shot of Union soldiers under arms

One soldier is eating out of his haversack and one has his tin cup attached to his haversack

I'm not sure about the tin cup on the haversack. It looks more to me that the tin cup is resting by it's handle off of his canteen cork, as if setting it there for a bit. It looks like his haversack (eyes following the strap across his chest) is behind his bayonet.

Great picture. Too bad it's so damaged.

                            David,

Is this the same guy you are looking at? Because I think that's pretty clearly attached to his haversack.

Nope, I was looking at the guy with the canteen on his belly. That's what I get for looking at the close-ups only.

There's no way I'd ever carry my cup like that unless I was in an encampment. March 20 guys back and you're sucking some decent dust. Imagine marching 800 guys back. And if you're next to someone like that his cup beats the heck out of you and your stuff. Oh well, I'm not going to hijack this thread into a tin cup discussion. Except that I'm still thinking that the guy I saw seems to be hanging his on his canteen, which is something I'd never have thought of, nor would I think it would be my preferred way of hanging on to it, but I might give it a shot for fun.
