  • Tremendous photo of Union troops

This is a great photo of Union troops with some Quaker Guns in March 1862. Can anyone ID the unit?

I believe that its the 95th Pennsylvania, Gosline's Zouaves. IIRC, this image was brought up in a thread about bayonet scabbards, but Im not sure right now.

Same guy with the dress hat brass on his forage cap appears to have a tompkin in his Lorenz (others also). The rifle slings are very clear -- even one man carrying his weapon by the sling.

I love all the detail close ups. I seem to remember this photo coming up before and someone talking about the Lorenze bayonets not fitting in the Springfield scabbards correctly.
            Thanks for posting this again.

Yes, they are 95th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Gosline Zouaves photographed at Centreville in the spring of 1862.

The 95th Pennsylvania took a serious beating during the war, losing 11 officers and 171 enlisted men killed in action and another 73 died of disease.

Another shot of this same group of men:

Not very PEC, indeed. This stalwart appears to have "not got the memo" about wearing the haversack outside the waist belt. (Hope I attached it right....)

Someone should pull him aside and tell him how they wore their gear back then.
