We have this Confederate belt, it appears to have white painted leather. Could it be an English import? I saw one pictured in EOG but that one was I believe an officer's belt but the paint job looked similar.
It was captured by a member of the 14th Connecticut on July 3d at Gettysburg. The story behind it is well documented as it was given to his brother who was also in the 14th and was wounded during the 3d day. We have quite a few items from this family on display.
Also written inside appears to be the name "O LEARY". I've looked the name up but wasn't able to find anyone with the same name who was at Gettysburg and would have squared off with the 14th CT. Whoever he was his blood still appears to be present on the left side of the buckle.
