This weekend I had a chance to visit the Rock Island Arsenal and while there took some photos of General Rodman's grave. I thought I would post these here for the artillerists, as I would say that Rodman's is perhaps one of the best guarded monuments on the Island, there being two Rodman guns whose size I don't know, as well as a fifteen inch gun. The grave is located towards the Illinois side of the cemetary, and unfortunately is next to the driving range. I've included images of the right and left trunions of the smaller guns (identical on both; date on left trunion, initials on right trunion) as well as the numbers on the breeches of the smaller guns. The artillery shell was off to the side of where it normally sits as it appeared that the cemetary caretakers had recently poured a new pad for the shell. I'm not sure if the round opening in the shell is for a fuse or for a mounting rod to hold it on to the base, although there was no such rod present in the wet concrete.
