  • Neat canteen/haversack on ebay.

Here is a link to an original bullseye canteen on ebay, what is unusual about it, is that it seems to be a battlefield pickup, that was repaired and carried from that point on in a modified CS Haversack. Has anyone ever heard of this being done? Its plain common sense logical, and some neat pictures and info to boot. http://cgi.ebay.com/Civil-War-Confed...item336142b195

MODS: I dont believe that its against the rules to link this as I am not selling it, just linked it for reference purposes, but feel free to delete, if I have fractured the rules.

Interesting, but I wonder what was the point of fixing the sling supports if it was going to be carried in the bag - take the sling off the bag, put it in the canteen = one less thing to carry. It would be interesting to see if there are any other repaired canteens and how they compare to this one.

I may be way off but while the canteen is original the repairs don't appear to be and my spidey sense tells me the bag is modern along with the brass grommet for the draw string. I think that the canteen was probably picked up by a reenactor, repaired and stored in a the sack. Back in the late 1970s/early 80s good qualitity reproduction stuff was not around. People had to improvise. I picked up an original M-1858 smooth side canteen with sling and cover for the 125th Manassas. It cost $25. I decided not to use it because my unit wanted to go with everybody using tin drums. I used an original bullseye canteen all through the rest of the 125th events up until about the late 90s when I finally retired it. My point is that people were improvising all sorts equipment and along with using some original equipment back in the day. I think this is one of those items.

        I agree with you Jim.

Back in the late 70s I used an original smoothside canteen. I had to replace two of the tin sling holders, gave it good internal cleaning, replaced the cover and cork, then used it for about 8 years until I bought a repop. The bag also hit me as being "modern". It just doesn't make sense.

          Hallo!

Herr Jim beat me to it...

          ;) :) :)

I also used an original canteen up until 1989 when I had loaned it to a Newcomer for his first event, and he took his first hit and fell on it- squishing flat as a pancake... (I had paid $18 in Gettysburg in the '70's for it.)

These things plague us, and stand to force us to weigh and decide between what we see AND the possibiity that it is "legit" and we are possibly dismisisng something legit out of hand.
But, IMHO, as the kit of the 1980's and 1990's enters the market, we see more and more.

The "brightness" and "slopiness" of the solder, and the nature of the "SC" stamp would keep me away were I to be a potential buyer.

Looking at the South Carolina stamp, I noticed at the bottom the letters "SCV". Could that possibly be Sons of Confederate Veterans?
I agree with the soldering comment.

Just a thought, but with the palmetto and moon could the SCV stand for South Carolina Volunteers. I'm not making a case that this is origninal equipment, but just an observation.
