I belive it is a vent, as in air vent and I know of nobody who reproduces one like that. The unnmentionable vendor in NJ painstakingly reproduces a vent for his kepis and McDowell hats or another style available is a small brass grommet like on an original Dress hat in the Wisconsin Veteren Museum.

That's a French made shako of the Chasseurs de Vincennes. 10,000 sets of these uniforms were awarded to 5 Union Regiments including the 62nd and 83rd Pennsylvania for proficiency in drill in late 1861. They got the complete ensemble including knapsacks but most of the uniforms were way too small for husky American boys. They wore the uniforms a couple of times only for dress and then turned them back into the Quartermaster. See this site for more on the uniform and follow the highlighted links to see another shako: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenders...d.html#letters

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana
