    Re: An Original French Knapsack

Cody, I thought of the same thing. Not sure if I can find out either way but I'm going to try.

Edit: Just searched through several online French census records, parish registers, and birth/marriage/death records with no luck on how I think the name is spelled. I might be way off on the the spelling though.

      Re: An Original French Knapsack

I hit the inked word/name with a black light which brought out the detail of the writing. It definitely says "moisselou" in separate lower-case letters. I haven't found this listed as a surname yet but there is a ruisseau de Moissalou (basically a stream or brook) located near the Narnhac commune in the Cantal department of south-central France. The 1846 "Dictionnaire Statistique du departement du Cantal" lists Moissalou as "a village west of town and the source of the stream of that name, which will meet with one of Siniq. It is there a modern castle, conveniently located on the prairies. It belongs to M. de la Garrigue, president of the court of St-Flour." Still not certain if this may link the knapsack to actual French use at some point or if the word may be a surname...fun to research nonetheless.
