To be honest it looks like a really bad 1960's reproduction. I could be way off but I've seen too many of these "artifakes" (always found at some anyomous estate sale) over the years. Besides for $5,000 I better know the soldier it belonged to and what unit he was in etc. I'd have to see a lot more documentation. Besides I've never seen a cartridge box built in those seemingly odd demesions. Is it me or is that box REALLY deep? Could be my browser not sure. Lets see what the experts have to say. Maybe Nick Duvall will see this post and can chime in.

Interesting item. Looks period but I will have to agree with Eric. There are SO MANY really good fakes of all sorts of CW items that I would not be comfortable with it. IMO if one wants a high dollar item buy it from a reputable dealer who guarantees authenticity. You may pay more but could lose less.

Not so fast, I have one exactly like it and mine came out of a very old collection.

I am not however certain of the Confederate attribution, I bought it as an interesting example of a Militia box.

If it turned out mine was a Texas box, all the better.

The boxplate is unlike any original I have ever noted in collections or reference books but it also bears no resemblance to post-war or modern restrikes I've noted either. I'm wondering if the star isn't applied vs. stamped into the plate. It appears so. Interesting, indeed!

Thanks for those images, certainly looks like a match to me.

Can you supply any dimensions for your box so I can have as full notes as possible for this type of box.

I did superimpose both the box plate and the ghost oval on the front of your box, and although similar yours has slightly more pointed ends.
