More than that, there was oyster ice cream. It was just frozen oyster stew, which of course is made of oysters and milk. I've made it and it's not bad. The key is not to expect it to be sweet.

When one considers that oysters and ice cream were both common delicacies, advertising them together would be like advertising pizza and ice cream today--maybe not the most natural flavor combination one could think of, but both incredibly common and eaten in the same type of context.

      Re: A Gastronomical Disaster?

For the life of me, I've searched for it in period documents I have regarding food and I can't see what possible popular flavors ice cream would have had. Can't find specifics...

As far as I can tell, natural cream flavor would be the only thing, but I'm pretty sure that isn't plausible. The Victorians were very fond of making new and exciting dishes with ingredients know to them and some of their dishes might seem a bit strange to our tastes today.

Looking at period cookery books shows a multitude of flavors, including my favorite pistachio.

Some menus I have from the 1850s-1860s list raspberry, lemon, vanilla.
