The boxes prior to this was similar, but they had a three compartment tin. The new five compartment tin was also introduced in 1860, just before the new style pouch.

I have the LD Haning (Tim Welch) repro of this box. It looks just like it.
The finial is of moulded or turned brass?

Tim's is copied from the 'Thaxton' box in the collection of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. It belonged to TB Thaxton of Co, C, 7th Texas Cavalry. I have just been studying that particular pouch, and Tim's is an exacting copy. The finial on my original appears to be turned brass. See picture.
