  • U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center

I wanted to share with everyone an invaluable resource center for images.
The United States Army Heritage and Education Center has an easy to use search on the left hand side of the screen. Look for "The Old Civil War Photos Database."
    http://www.ahco.army.mil/site/index.jsp

The directions they gave me to order scans/copies of their images is to send a direct email to the address below, and include the photo caption and the folder number.

For those who haven't visited, this site is definitely worth seeing. I wholeheartedly second Mark's recommendation.

That is a wonderful site. I enjoyed the brief glance. I have marked it for a later return.

      Thanks for the site

They also have a great book collection. I've stopped there a few times on my home from Gettysburg to peruse such books as Confederate Rifles and Muskets.

Re: U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center

Just visited the site for the 2nd time today and every photo I've tried to pull up is "Unavailable at this time". I also find it a difficult site to use, though that wouldn't be so bad if after going through all of their linking and .pdf process you could actually pull up a photo.

Am I doing something wrong? There's nothing on the site that says its photo archive is down, just that the photos are unavailable at this time. And, while I only tried 4 or 5 links before giving up in exasperation, I never did actually click on any reference that led to an actual photo.

It worked for only a couple before I started getting the unavailable messages.

I'm one to get as much hands on documentation as possible, that way if something does happen, workcase scenario a fire, the image itself will not be lost, just the original.

If you want certain images, contact them, and get a quote. I'm still awaiting mine.
