    Here is the 2008 debt, lets compare. At least we were on the gold standard then, thank you federal reserve.:wink_smil

      We didn't go onto the "gold standard" until 1873. Before that, our currency was based on gold and silver, but the government kept debasing the amount of precious metal per dollar. By the Civil War, the government minted specie only in silver (William Jennings Bryan would pine for these days in the 1890's).
