  • Lorenz Owners: Half-cock height for an original?

    Hey, Folks,

I recently got a Lorenz and had a question:
When my Lorenz is at half-cock, the face of the hammer is only about 1/4" or 3/8" from the cone.

    Is that normal?

    Thanks!

    Hey Comrade,
The halfcock on my Lorenz is only about a 1/4" from the cone also. Either that is the norm, or we both have screwed up Lorenz rifles.:)

Same as mine. It's tricky, but you can get a cap on.

This is normal for originals. The Lorenz has a very short half cock at least on all the originals I have seen and I would estimate I have seen at least 15 different originals if not more. I am sure Kurt or Tim Prince can provide further enlightenment.

A short half-cock throw like that is normal for the original Lorenz and for French muskets as well. In actual service this was not a problem, the cap is placed on the cone with the hammer at full cock.

                John,

To confirm what you have been told, all of the un-altered Lorenz's that I have encountered (100+ at this point) have that same, very low, half cock. The nice thing is that it actually holds the cap on the cone, without having to crimp in on with your fingers. The down side is capping at full cock and then lowering the hammer. Every time I come across a Lorenz with a "US" style half cock, I find the internal parts have been altered or replaced.

Enjoy that gun, and I'll hook you up with a bayonet soon.

                    Gents,
Don't get me wrong... I dig the low half-cock on the Lorenz. However, I forsee some squirrelly looks from reenactor sergeants and captains during inspection. I'm sure someone will tell me that it is unsafe, despite the fact it was used in N-SSA competition by its former owner, a highly qualified gunsmith. But, whatchagonnado? ;)

                    Thanks!

                      John,

I'm curious as to which firearm your qoute is in reference to? This is not the first quote I have seen about Belgian rifles being drawn from the Institute...however, I was under the impression that it was the M1851 the LHV originally drew from VMI before marching off to Harper's Ferry.

John mines not even that far away at half cock. The only way I could cap it is at full cock of the hammer. They sure are sweet muskets though aren't they? :D

Interesting. Until I saw this thread I always assumed low half-cock on my Lorenz was some sort of malfunction.
