  • Officer Shoulder Boards - How to attach??

    Hey, Folks!

I have a set of officer shoulder boards that I need to attach to a coat. They are very flat and my shoulder is very round.

How do you attach the suckers so they are bent round like one's shoulder??
Are you 'sposed to remove the cardboard or whatever is in there stiffening the darned thing, or... ??

    Thanks!

    Hey John,

The ones I have were already used, pre-war type, and they were bent with the stifner/cardstock remaining. I think you should just bend them to the desired curve , kinda like a modern hat ballcap bill, for your shoulder and whip-stitch in place.

You might see who else chimes in to reach a concensus of methods.

    Good Luck,

I do the same thing as Erik. It works- not a lot of frills to this one.

I find taking the cardboard out helps in sewing and getting the "curve".

          John,

I don't suppose there's any way to flatten out your shoulders? :tounge_sm

I don’t remember ever seeing an original pair of shoulder straps with cardboard in them.

Buy a pair from Osman. Good price, easy to put on and accurate.

Re: Officer Shoulder Boards - How to attach??

              Hallo!

              Pretty well covered...

              1. Remove the cardboard "stiffeners"
              2. Bend/curve the cardboard

I whip stitch the four corners. Prior to the late 1850's it was not unusual to wear one's shoulder straps OVER one's epaulettes- so the "long sides" of the straps were not sewn down. Following the discontinued practice, I sometimes whip stitch just the ends. Originals do show up sewn on all four sides.

(Although there are always "variations on a theme" such as the image of Captain George Meade wearing his epaulettes over his straps. Perhaps he was too lazy to remove them.. ;))

And last is the question of placement- their being found on the shoulder seam and as far "in" as centered on the shoulder.

Try soaking them in water and sewing them on while wet. Then wear the coat while they dry.
