I've used the reciept our late friend Charlse posted over and over and never had a problem with spoilage, even on the hottest summer days.

HOWEVER!

I only put in my "can" what I think I'll use in the 36 hours most events last, the rest I store in my spare frige, in glass, until I need it. AND, I wash out my can as soon as I get home. That stuff will eat a can faster than it will spoil.

When you make your label, use yellow paper. My friend Marc Benedict owns an original, and the label is yellow paper. Not saying all Essence of Coffee labels were yellow, but all the original ones I've seen (a total of 1) and held in my hand were yellow.

This is about as close as I could get to the original I posted earlier in this thread. Hard to tell due to the flash but the label is a brownish yellow. Thanks.

Does anyone know of a Borden's Essence of coffee label floating around or that even know what one looks like? Because I would love to reproduce one of those!

There used to be a Group here that had several food labels. I just looked for it but couldn't find it. I put in there a label that I created from an original at the QM Museum in Ft. Lee VA. It was George Hummel's Essence of Coffee Manufactured by Bohler & Weikel. Bohler was a major coffee manufacturer in Phil. in 1859, and Bohler & Weikel were in business together in 1861, but I do not know about 1860. The common label that everyone see's that was sold by a sutler was a similar label but said "Manufactured by Jewett & Sherman". They weren't in business during the war, they started in 1868.

I've only seen a label for Borden's Condensed Milk, not Essence of Coffee, but I'd like to see it if there is one.

So instead of creating a new thread on the subject, I figured I would renew this very informative one. My question is does anyone know the dimensions of the can this came in? I've heard it came in various size cans, but does anyone have the dimensions of the known existing ones on display in museums. Thank you in advance.

My original is 2 1/2 inches tall by 2 inches wide

Too bad the photo at the top of the article is the typical post war label that an old sutler still puts on its cans and another label provider used to sell. That company didn't exist until after the war, and didn't originate in Milwaukee.
