Short's Knapsack

I wanted to know if anyone had any information (dimensions, fabrics, etc.) about the Short's Knapsack? I am planning on making one of these and would like to know if anyone has any research on it.

The best idea would be to make arrangements to view an original example for yourself. That way you can take your own notes, measurements, photos, etc that would determine what your reproduction should look like.

Making a knapsack is not an easy task either. If you do not have much or any experience working with leather and/or tarred cloth, starting from someone else's research is certainly not the way I would recommend.

There is a lot of unique hardware on a Short's Knapsack. You just might get better milage buying one from Nick S. or picking one up used.

I just finished a shorts knapsack they are very difficult !!!! And there is some special hardware that you will have to run down. The Civil War Collectors Encyclopedia has the patent diagrams. I would go that route as well try to get some info from the patent office as well as studying a orginal.

If you can...plan to attend the Relic Shows in Circuit, for $5 it's like walking into a museum, where most everything is for sale...and you can touch stuff!

Mr. Carter YOU may think it's hard and a horrible, wretched thing to make but as far as I can tell that is not much harder that what I have already made. Everyone (that replied with something useful) thanks for the help.

I don't think what Mr. Carter said to you was all that incorrect or harsh, just words of warning. That particular pack is a little harder to make correctly, with alot of specialty hardware that I have not found currently available other than on the pack produced by the man from New Jersey we can't mention. I've made several types of packs over the years, and he is correct, they are more difficult. I definitely don't say this to discourage you as well, quite the opposite, I encourage to make any and all items for yourself - you appreciate things much more when you've taken the time to research and produce something for yourself.

Chad,

You should be able to find the patent information for the pack through the Patent & Trademark Office website. It will definitely have drawings and a description but I'm not sure about measurements. If I get some time I'll try searching for the link to this specific patent. I know someone has the patent information (he's mentioned in an earlier post) but it's probably not a wise idea to ask him for it, especially if he knows you plan on making one !!!!
