The latest A.G.M. catalog has a Federal Civil War blanket listed for sale. I posted the description below. Has anyone ever seen or read about Federal blankets issued with state initials in the center instead of US? If you have, I am very interested in getting sources or seeing other examples!!! If you don't have CW documentation, but know of post-war issue, I'd be interested in seeing or hearing about that as well. Thanks in advance to anyone with information!
A110 - Civil War State Issue Blanket
Original Civil War brown wool blanket issued by the state of New Jersey with typical 2 over 2 twill seen in most Federal blankets. The warp threads are approximately half the diameter of the filling yarns. A very small amount of shoddy (chopped up pieces of old clothing and fabric scraps mixed into the yarn) is evident in the filling yarns and appears to be primarily dark blue. The light brown blanket has dark brown stripes on either end formed by weaving in darker filling yarn. The distance between the two 2-3/4" (7cm) stripes is 59" (150cm). Hand-worked into the center (and only on one side) are brown woolen seriffed letters "N.J." measuring 3-3/4" (9cm) tall. Constructed of a single piece of fabric measuring 5'1" (156cm) wide and an estimated 6'2" (188cm) long, hemming on each end and trimming down the sides has made exact measurement impossible. The original size was probably closer to the regulation 7' x 5-1/2'. Heavy use over the years has thinned the blanket material though more bulk is evident in the hemmed areas. The blanket, though still pliable with strong colors, has seen a lot of use and exhibits an abundance of tears, snags and holes. Most noticeable is a 13" (~33cm) rip starting on one hemmed side and running up the center. The worked area around the "N.J." has given away revealing a 3cm diameter hole at the top of letter N's right leg. However, if you collect Civil War accouterments, you know that the two hardest pieces (in any condition) to find are an original haversack and issue blanket. We are proud to be able to offer this blanket which we recently acquired from an old Pennsylvania collection. III
