    Paul,

I can't help you with the specific article you seek, but here is a recent piece about Hightower, which appeared in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star newspaper this past April.

His uniform (frock, vest and pants) remains on display at the NPS's Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center.

      Eric,

Thanks, just came across that article myself this morning. I'm looking for the CMH article specifically to see what light it may shed on the uniform Hightower is wearing in the image (I've heard it comments that the trim on his cap may actually be "blue" and not black).

Seen the Frock (double-breasted), Vest and Trousers at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitors Center (although the glare on the glass significantly reduces any chance of getting decent pictures).

Do you know if in the NPS Collection they have any letters to/from/about Hightower?

Still looking for a copy of the CMH Article listed above.

      Thanks,

      Paul B.

Nope, no Hightower letters in the park's collection.

          Paul,
I have a copy of the CMH article (I've nearly completed my full set of CMH just a few small gaps left). I'll try and get a copy of it into the computer this weekend.

            Paul,

I feel dumb asking this, but you have seen the drawings of Hightower's clothing? If not, ask any of the old timers in the 23rd Virginia for a copy of the Confederate Sketchbook. Warning! Warning! This is not cutting edge material for 2008, but a heck of a lot of sutlers cut their teeth on those patterns, such as they are.

              Charles,

Yep...owner of 2 copies of Confederate Sketchbook. Have also visited the Chancellorsville NPS Station to view the uniform on display (unfortunately, this uniform is on perpetual display...and being in the glass case prevents one from viewing interior details...configuration of glass case and lighting prevents almost any pictures from being taken of this).

The uniform on display at Chancellorsville, and pictures in the sketchbook, was purchased for William A. Hightower, by his parents upon his election to 1st Sgt. for Company E. of the 23rd VA...and is not the Early-war militia uniform he's wearing in his famous photograph.

Still looking for CMH article...and any other 23rd VA resources individuals would be willing to share.

              Thanks,

              Paul B.
