Maybe I'm still a newbie.. but where did you get your hands on a French Knapsack? Did you purchase one recently from an outside vendor or did you make your own? AND if so what's the impression you're going for?
Just wonderin' I've been looking at a few examples since you posted.

I think Lord Voldemort a.k.a. NJ************** was making these a while back, probably eight years ago or so. I do not know of anyone who is currently producing them now.

I think the french knapsacks could be the latest item offered by Wrinn Inc...I own one of his coverlets...a.k.a. wrinnletts...and have seen his special addition ugly-as-the-backside-of-a-mud-fence confederate trousers a.k.a. wrinnsors.
Surely it's not the 1747 Louisburgh issue

Luke,
Surely you can not be calling Chad's scarcrow trousers ugly! I believe the great Ross of Florida and the Great Blunt of Florida replicate these bags.
I was down at the Nashville Show and a man was selling it he said it was made by Sam Haywood (never heard of him?) The Knapsack I'm talkin about is the one Mr. Miconnet has posted . I was looking at making them if anyone is interested.

I can't get my computer too upload the photos but the Knapsack is almost exactly like the one you have the pictures for but it does not have the ties on the Flap opening.
