  • Petersburg Rations~CS??

    Gentlemen,

I've got an event coming up in a few weeks, which my unit will be providing rations for...I'm very interested in any PRIMARY/SECONDARY references for CS Rations during the Petersburg Siege.

Our standby (in the event, no documentation is forth-with), is to provide the usual typical assumption; salt-pork, hard-tack, rice...etc....but it sure would be nice to provide some documentation behind what may be issued.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!

I don't have it in front of me here at work, but the History of a Brigade of South Carolinians by Caldwell written while encamped in Dinwiddie around petersburg goes into a little bit of detail. From just memory, the CS Troops by late 64 early 65 were eating about 1/4 pound of salt pork and about 14-16 oz. of corn meal a day. Of course all of this was coming up from the Southside Railroad and Boydton Plank Rd.
