Bayonet for the ArmiSport 1842 and Pitching Tents

Gents,

Has anybody made any experience pitching tent with an ArmiSport 1842 musket and fixed Italian repro bayonet? Does the repro bayonet fulfill the task or will it bend?

I know that an original bayonet would be the better choice, but I already have the repro bayonet ... and I would like to try and make do with it if possible.

Hi,

I have done this with my M1861 Springfield (using a reproduction bayonet), and it worked fairly well. My bayonet did not bend, however I would be very careful when putting it in the ground. Just my 2 cents.

Hallo!

Repro bayonets are not tempered to be "springy" like originals, and depending upon the steels used typically, NUG, bend and do not bend back.

And not being made the same, the elbows have been known to snap off.

But NUG, they just bend and stay "bent."

In using a repro bayonet, there are a number of factors such as the steel, the manufacturing process, the hardness or softness of the soil, the amount of wind, and the tension/weight on the ridge line...

I would recommend caution. It depends on the temper of the steel in the bayonet. I have witnessed breakage from doing this and you would swear that the bayonet was made of "white metal". It looked like it was crystallized.
