    Good question, Paul. The buttonhole stitch works best for all grommets and eyelets because it gives strength. Each stitch actually makes its own knot. Also historically used for sails, grommets generally bear a lot of stress. Certainly, someone could do wider stitches in a hurried manner, but quality work always pays off.

      Alot of time gromets were just whipped over instead of useing a button hole stitch. This is actually pretty common on shelter halves.
