  • Stupid Question

I'm afraid this is going to be one of those questions, where you hit yourself in the head, with the flat of your hand, when you get an answer.

I was on the Sykes' Regulars web site photo folder. There is a photo of a Federal cartridge box. with "U.S.B." stenciled on the handle of the box. For the life of me, I can't figure out what U.S.B. stands for.

The other markings are pretty standard:

    (1,000)
    CARTRIDGES
    U.S.B. (on the handle)
    RIFLE MUSKET
    CAL .574, 65 GR.
    1864

Initials of the owner is a possibility... only if the owner's first name was Ulysses, perhaps. :p

From the looks of the photo, "U.S.B" was stenciled on the box at he same time as all the other markings.

                      Perhaps the manufacturer?

                        Brandon,

I thought of that, but I couldn't think of an arsenal with the initials U.S.B. Also, the arsenal information was usually on the side of the box, or more commonly, on the inside of the top.

It seems my question wasn't as stupid as I thought! :)

                          Bill,

How about contacting Watervliet Arsenal, or perhaps Springfield Armory? Maybe their curators have some knowledge and/or experience with such markings.

                              Eric,

Excellent idea. Watervliet may be an good source for this information. The Arsenal was a major supplier of small arms ammo during the War.

                              Thanks,
