Hand Stitching question

I have read back through some of the old threads and the links in some of those threads but I can not for the life of me find out how to do a correct period bartack stitch.

All I have seen are instructions to do a bartack stitch and that is is far as things go. No actual instructions how it is done. Can anyone give some directions on how to hand stitch a period bartack not for a button hole but for reinforcing a high stress area such as a seam?
