  • In Search of Early War Virginia Engraving

I'm in search of (digital if possible) the engraving done of Early-War Virginia Soldiers...believe this originally appeared in Harper's Weekly...subsequently reprinted in Les Jenson's Johnny Reb.

    Thanks,

Could you provide a description of the engraving?

If it was in Harper's Weekly, the CD's we sell on our website (www.raggedsoldier.com) contain about 5 years worth of the newspapers scanned at 300 dpi.

The engraving was done Early in the war...shown in the image are several "typical" soldiers shown in their Early-War uniforms...a Virginia Cadet, Virginia Cavalryman...etc.

I'm racking my brain now...because I checked Johnny Reb...and the engraving is not shown in that book. I know I didn't imagine this sketch...I just can't remember were I saw it.

Re: In Search of Early War Virginia Engraving

OK...I know I'm not losing my mind now...as I found the engraving of Union Uniforms in the August 31st, 1861 printing of Harper's Weekly...then worked backwards and found the image of the Confederarate Uniforms in the August 17th, 1861 issue.

I'm now in search of the Confederate engraving with better clarity.

        Thanks,

        Paul B.

Nice engravings. I like the fellow in the lower r/h corner of the CS uniforms, wearing the huntsman frock from the colonial era. He would be drummed out if he showed up at an event these days.
