  • Cape Patterns?

    Okay Fellas,
After seeing numerous period pics of officers wearing capes I am wondering if there are any patterns out there for sewing one yourself. I have yet to see one utilized by those ossifers in our ranks. I have not seen any out there offered for sale either. Anyway, I would like to make one for myself.
    Thanks...

I made one from Chris Daileys site look in the research area. You will have to draft your own pattern. He gives basic measurements of an original. Good Luck

      Okay,
The cape on Daley's website has four panels. So, I am assuming that there would be two sets of identical panels. One set for the middle and one set for each side. With the bottom of each panel curved to create a circular edge when finished? Looks like a five button front. I would guess logwood dyed thread was used to put it together. So, I would get english broadcloth, the eagle I buttons ( cuff size), some black velvet for the collar and use my indigo #16 glace thread and black silk thread and use black polished cotton for the lining. Just pondering this project at the moment...
      Thanks...

I have made 2 of these the first was English Kersey in cadet grey for my Confederate impression. The second is out of dark blue broadcloth that I made my Federal kit out of. I used Federal Staff buttons for both and black silk for the linning. Both have velvet collars.

I have a pic of my g-g-g-grandpa wearing his. It had the same buttons as on his frock with a black velvet collar. It looks to be made of dark blue English broadcloth. I think I can just make out a hook and eye as well on the collar.

                Dean,

Can you identify some of the numerous period pics? My Chris Daley made cape just might be the most useful garment I own for an officer impression, and it would be good to some more period examples.
