Re: Best way to remove rust from bore?

I use a ratio of about 7 parts water to 1 part molasses. Stir it up well before using. You want the molasses to be well disolved in the water. When finished, rinse it well in hot water, dry thoroughly, then oil immediately afterwards.

A bronze bore brush is good to get the loose rust out, but it will never reach down to the bottom of the pits. That's where the molasses solution really shines. It gets into the little nooks and crannies.

Forgot to mention, took out the lock and fortunately it's nice and clean inside.

          Hallo!

I have see recommendations of 20:1 down to 5:1 (water:molasses).

          5:1 seems common.

The one I like is to use a plastic bristle bore brush and colgate tooth paste. It works great. The tooth paste washes out very easliy, and you only need to use a verly small amount. If you use too much you will have to put a lot of effort into rinsing it out.

              Hallo!

Toothpaste is a mild abrasive and polishing agent.

A nice tight patch soaked with Break free CLP. Wonderful stuff.
