    Re: My First CW Kit

Thanks! My friends wife is amazing with needle and thread. She done all the hard work on this one and I done the hand sewing.

I have a canteen that I am bringing back to life. Just need to make a new sling and cover for it.

Which Mikey Black jean is your jacket made from...NICE! I'll second the recommendation on a good Starbuck cap or Bender slouch hat - these guys are good!

        Hallo!

Taunus Mountains.. although the Eifels can be nice.

Hmmmm. Three legged stools can really mess up the looks and lines of a knapsack or bedroll.

Curt, I believe the trick is you have to carry the stool on the OUTSIDE of the knapsack or bedroll- at least while on campaign!

            Hallo!

            Aha...

I've been doing it wrong all these years.
Three legged stool on the outside, styrofoam blocks on the inside.

            I think I got it now. :)

              Paul,

We all (or most) started with some mainstream sutler gear. And the shoes? Well, my very first event was Shiloh 97, and a fellow Army officer (and re-enactor) loaned me a pair of colonial buckle shoes when my shoes ordered from a vendor had not yet arrived by the departure date. So yours are not off base much, and who can say with certainty that there were not any straight last shoes worn, on either side, especially early war and in militia units pressed into service?

Keep improving your kit, take all suggestions in stride, do your research, research some more, and make your kit appropriately. Though meant for the Federal re-enactor, get a copy of the Columbia Rifles Research Compendium, 1st and 2nd Editions. The articles and guides in there can be adopted for a CS impression also, especially the first person guides. Finally, go with the authenticity standards and guidance of your unit and what you ae portraying. Just my opinion, others will vary.

                Sepoy,

Its the Cadet Gray fabric. I want to have a kepi made from the same fabric, as I prefer them over slouch hats.

"I prefer them over slouch hats."

Be careful. The phrase "I prefer" has no place in historic presentation, unless you have a clear choice in the matter. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.
In regards to your impression, I've seen worse, much worse, at some of the EBUFU. Keep plugging away with the gear, but more importantly, get to events.

                    I second that motion.

Thanks for the advice Bill, but at the moment I am just looking to complete a generic Army of Northern Virginia impression. I am fully aware that once I start nailing down my kit to a specific unit and time that I need to be more careful.

I will certainly take your advice and look for this book!

                        Paul,
You look better at this stage than I did when I first assembled a generic CS impression!
I have to agree, a medium crown bowler hat from Tim Bender is an excellent recommendation.
I am proud to own your jacket's twin!

If I was going to build my own 3 legged stool, what wood would be the most authentic? And, how long should the legs be to make it authentic?
And, what thickness should the seat be?
And, approx. diameter of the legs?
And, at what legnth do I need to add horizontal supports between the legs?

                          Thank-you for your time.

Have to watch out for those "good NC friends"; they'll lead you into trouble ever' time.
