Period Font

[Guy Gane III]

I have a question regarding period styles of writing.

I have been approached by a teacher who wishes to teach the children how to write, in cursive, like the people of the 1860's. I have shown her period examples of the letters that I have copies of, but she was wondering if I (or anyone) has a sample sheet of the letters and numbers of the 1860's, as in a school instructional chart.

Can you help me, help her?

These all have something useful in them. They range from the 1840's to 80's. All of them teach a method that contemporary calligraphers would call "Spencerian" but only because he was the most successful of the type. So successful in fact, that I don't think you can find his stuff on Google Books.

Sullivan Press used to include instructions on 1860's penmanship with their pen and ink set. Not sure what is offered now as I have not placed an order from him for quite some time. Might be worth and e-mail to Mr. Sullivan. I taught myself the script through that sheet and from transcribing letters. Many times, as you probably figured out already, the manner characters was unique to the person writing them or some times, I'm speculating also who taught them to write. I formed my style by combining what I found and adding my own squirls etc. to letters. Fun stuff!
