Simple Canteen Fixes

Now, whenever I go to mainstream events it kills me to look at shiny canteens with wool all over them along with chains attached to the cork. So I just thought I'd list some easy ways to authenticize your canteen:

1. Take that wool off your canteen unless it's a jean or scrap wool, better yet just leave it bare.

2. Replace the chain that attaches to the cork with a leather string.

3. Go out and find yourself a white rubber cork (If you portray a Confederate soldier since they issued the canteens with white rubber corks from what I've researched. I'm not too sure if it was the same for Federals.)

4. If you just purchased a canteen shorten the strap! I constantly see everyone with canteens and haversacks dangling by their feet.

Your canteen as shown is an example of what? All of the documented Confederate stainless steel bullseye canteens with rubber corks? And sky blue covers? &c...Here is another suggestion:

1. Start out with a tin canteen as stainless steel was not in use.
2. Cover it as you suggest with a plain, scrap or jean wool cover.
3. Try a hemp twine, or twisted linen cork wire from ropesmith,
copied from an original in Fred Gaede's collection. $1.

Nope. I actually asked my friend if it was before I swapped him for it. I would've beat him if it was. But it's rusting all around where it was soldered.

for CS use of a bullseye, the southern guard has a bang up article on their website. seems most were uncovered and had leather slings though....
