making ground cloths?

Gents,

I am looking for instructions on making confederate ground cloths. I know boiled linseed oil was used but I'm not to sure on the process for painting the cloth drying ect. I searched the forum and couldn't find anything that was helpfull your guidance and expertise in this matter would be most appreciated

I am in absolutely no way a expert but.........here is a recipe ........I know there is a thread somewhere on here, hope this helps. Caution is advised when making the coating. It is all very flammable:angry_smi

There are several methods, some more authentic than others, some safer than others (debatable). Search the forum for "period painted cloth" or "period paint methods" and you will find the threads. It usually gets discussed from time to time. You can probably even search "boiled linseed oil" and find info that will help.

Pete, Thank you very much for the link that was exactly what I have been looking for! I have found myself with a lot of free time lately and so I will give a ground cloth a go.

Please remember when painting with any boiled Linseed oil based paint or emulsion to not only let it dry, but MOST IMPORTANTLY to cure.

Hang up the painted article in a area (preferably out side) where the air can get around the item . Let it hang for a minimum of 2 weeks to a month after painting to cure.

Cure time depends on relitive humidity
( High Humidity = Long cure time. Low Humidity = Short cure time).

ONCE THE PAINT OR EMULSION IS DRY AND CURED, IT IS TOTALLY SAFE
