  • Black Powder Dipper

Need suggestions on what to use as a "dipper" to measure out 60 grain of black powder when loading my .58 caliber paper cartridges.

Empty out your tin of black powder into an old plastic ketchup bottle, like the one that are used in a restaurant. Snip off the top, so that you get a bigger opening, although I use FFF, so I have very little problem of having powder stick. Pour the powder into a brass measure, I usually use bout 60gr in my 53 Enfield, 80gr in my 42 Springfield. Pour into your cartridges. Voila!

If you got to the bottom of the page here: http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(lcw...30&styleID=450 there are devices that screw right into a Goex can. The one second from the bottom is what I was fortunately talked into getting. It fits into the brass powder measure. You push the lever and it fills it. It's completely spillproof.

Black powder plus plastic can cause a static electricity buildup that can result in an explosion. I've seen it happen

          Re: Black Powder Dipper

          Hallo

Perhaps the most convenient is to get an adjustable (NUG) brass blackpower measure from any of the blackpowder supply vendors.
They are NUG adjustable in 120 grain (by volume) increments.

Sometimes, BP vendors sell cheaper simple measures that are just a tube that is of the right length and diameter to contain say 60 grains.

Non-period? A melon baller. Just put a dab of epoxy in the hole. The large end of one of these, level, is right at 60 grains. Then use a small funnel to pour down the powder. Once you get the hang of it, you can load very quickly.

I use a 303 british spent brass cartridge. It gives me 60grains of fffg and has a nice taper at the end so you do not spill any.

                Wizzard,
For a non-period dipper, try a plastic dipper found in a baby formula can. As Curt said, you can measure out how many grains you need. Pour that into the dipper and make a mark along the outside. After ALL powder is out of the dipper, score a line for a hole (file, disk grinder, etc.) to allow you to pour out excess powder. This works well for speedy loading of blank cartridges when you are not so picky on exact measurement. Then pour into rolled tubes.

I was wondering how long it would take someone to say this. Ditto. NEVER use a device that can buildup static electricity on blackpowder. If you're following the drill and safety manuals in the field, then practice it off the field also.
