  • Ross & Co. pattern pack

    Gents,
Having spent the last three evenings going through my books, files, notes taken from items in personal collections, etc., I was unable to turn up any information on the subtle differences and nuances between an I & C pack and the Ross & Co. pack. Would any of you with an area of interest in British equipment be able to help?
    Regards,
    Paul Manzo

Re: Ross & Co. pattern pack

This is a very deep investigation which probably goes beyond my references.
As far as I am aware British firms supplied two different knapsacks.
The 1856 pattern as worn by the British army and surplus knapsacks of the older pattern. The primary differences are in the method of suspension.
Please let me know what pattern Ross supplied and I can provide detailed drawings of pre 1856 Crimean War knapsack.
The firm became Ross and Co. in 1860 and were listed at 9, 10 & 11 Ellis Quay, Dublin.
They were manufacturers of Camp Furniture and portmanteau.
