  • Drill cloth weave

    Hello,
I'm trying to have a correct period weight/width cotton drill custom woven for shelter halves, &c. but I need more information on the weave. I lent out my copy of Gaede some time ago and I can't seem to find the information anywhere. Does anyone know the correct twill weave pattern and weight for the drill cloth used in shelter halves, haversacks, &c ?

    Re: Drill cloth weave

It should be in the six to eight ounce weight, about 28 inches wide. The weave appears about identical to the currently available drill cloth. Not bleached, nor brushed. If you wish I can find the postwar specifications for drill, just not for a few days. What is rather more important is the selvedge. Can your weavers arrange to weave it without that annoying fringe or heavy wide ribbed selvedge?

It seemed to have been a 2/1 twill weave like modern drill. You can tell from the pics in Gaede's book.

Weight should be 8 oz and the width for early war is 28.5" and mid to late is 33.5".

Ok, next question then. I went to Jo-ann fabrics to look for said fabric. "Drill 40" on their website. The ladies in the fabric department looked at me like I had "lobsters coming out of my ears" when I asked where the cotton drill was located. One lady insisted I meant cotton twill. Should have taken a printout from the website.

            Jeff,

It will be with the utility fabrics: burlap, cotton duck, and the like. Just ask them where they keep their canvas and they will be able to direct you.
