  • Folded Cloth Stars on Flags

I have a question I have a photo to include but don't know how to do so...grumble. (I kept hitting the little yellow picture icon but nothing happens.)

I am attempting to figure out HOW a star was sewn onto a flag so that the edges wouldn't fray.

I have a tiny image shrunk down as well as the full mama-jama that is super detailed of a star on a Confederate Battle Flag. From what I can see and assume, the edges are folded under and the thing is sewn down.

If I am correct....HOW ON EARTH is a star cut out of material so that there is enough edge to fold under?

This one has me pickled... Anybody know how this was done OR has successful figured something like this out?

    Regards,
    -Mike Montgomery

Re: Folded Cloth Stars on Flags

When the stars are cut out, it isn't cut a as star, rather a 5 or 6 pointed 'starish' shape. It should be cut out larger than the finished star shape, with the ends leveled off, then in the interior points cut down to accomodate folded under. So, with enough extra material to fold/press under, stars are actually in their finished shape and are pinned & can be hand felled on to prevent fraying...

See the attached basic sketch of a star point, prior to pressing. The dashed lines show where the sides are pressed under, thus have a point to fell on to a flag. The red lines in the 2nd sketch show how the final star appears.

If you want more in-depth info on how it's done, look for quilting books in the library: you'll be checking out a technique called "applique" ("to apply"). It's not difficult to do by any means, and the results are a solid, applied motif, that doesn't fray out, with no visible stitching. Pretty nifty!

41st Alabama Infantry Regiment's flag. I have been to the Alabama Archives and got to examine the actual article, make tons of notes, take lots of pictures, and really give it a good once over.

              Mike,

I am just curious, are you making it for a keepsake or for field use, or what?

              Here's why I am asking.

I have done a great deal of research on Gracie's Alabama Brigade, particularly the 59th and 60th, but I have some information on the 41st and 43rd as well. That flag in Alabama State Archives was captured on March 31, 1865 right after Petersburg. They only received that flag a short while before, so technically, the only place that flag ever saw service was during the 8 months that Gracie's Brigade was in Petersburg and in the retreat toward the end.

The 43rd and 59th Alabama's flags were captured on March 25th by the 185th NY.

Gracie's Brigade is one of those interesting brigades that was reorganized after Chickamauga and given to Longstreet. They didn't get the ANV flags until they reached Petersburg, then lost them shortly afterward in action around Hatcher's Run and Appomattox Court House. Their early war flags were of AoT styles. So there really aren't many places and times to use their flags in a correct setting. From Petersburg to the battles around Appomattox are about it.

I am not knocking you making the flag or anything. I plan to have 59th and 60th flags made for hanging in my home. I just wondered if you were planning on using it as colors in an event.

                Hi Ben,

It's for my own S & Gs! Seriously though, no "use" (per se) is forthcoming for this home addition.
