  • Stitching once more

    Hallo Kameraden,
first a machine stitching Question: If they sew by maschine for example a vest or coat down the sideseam, once you reach the position, where the Tabs are include in the seam. My modern maschine isn't strong enough to sew those all layers. I put the downholder up, pull a little the fabric, put it down again and do the sewing action by hand by turning the wheel, and so on , until this passage was sewn. Did this work with the old maschines, or did they sew until they reach the Tabs, and done this piece by handsewing?
How long is the common length of a seam on Uniform sewn with one piece of Thread, bzw how long do you cut the Thread if you do handsewing. I normaly cut a piece of thread 60-70cm long.

    Re: Stitching once more

I do not know if this is what your looking for but it might answer your question, but My machines that I use for most of my sewing do the same thing that you have stated. However my grandmother has an old foot powered sewing machine and it pushes through the thicker seams like nothing is there. I am sort of afraid to use that machine for that very reason. I would like to keep all my fingers as they are and not full of needle holes. Hope this helps

You may benefit from the use of a "walking foot" or adjustment of the presser foot if this is a modern machine you are talking about. You might also want to change out your needle depending on how long it has been used and what type of fabrics have been run under it. Needle tips will dull over time and are cheap enough to replace.

I have 3 different machines 2 Singers & a White and have no problems sewing vests or coats. In fact they all will sew through multiple layers of duck much thicker than any vest seam with tabs I have done. Check our your machine manufacturers web page for troubelshooting guides.
