  • Striped Canteen Straps

While I was at the Franklin, TN. event, I saw some neat striped canvas canteen straps on some of the tin drum canteens...

I remember some time back a suttler was selling them, but I cannot find who it was on the vendor list.
Any one out there making them?

Wambaugh, White and Co. carries striped, canvas webbing canteen straps. Not sure if they're the exact sort you're looking for:

I bet one of those was on Kiev's canteen. He used to carry a darker variety of the stripped canteen strap. He might have some left around too!

Don't know if this was the type of strap you are referring to but it is interesting.

Joe Blunt at Carter Jasper supplied several of the canteens and slings that were in use.

I'll add that a large number of herringbone canteen straps issued from Philadelphia Depot were made with blue threads woven into the edges and sometimes had a red line dyed in the center. One of the earliest contracts for "one inch colored webbing" came from Charles Mount of Philadelphia and dates to November 1st, 1862.

The Federal canteen with the striped strap is great. I saw one almost exactly like it at the Ohio Civil War Show last year; the strap itself was a twill woven "ticking" material, rolled and double stitched, with a common Japanned wire buckle sewn in place for adjustment.
