  • William's Cleaner Round Paper

    Hello all,

I was just curious if anyone had found a good source for blue paper for making william's cleaner cartridges. So far I have found good sources for tan-brown paper for regular rounds, as well as green paper for cap tubes, but the blue william's round papaer still evades me.

    Thank you for your time,

You can use a dark red paper also. Years ago, we X-rayed my original unopened pack of St. Louis Arsenal Cartridges and it contained 3 Williams cleaner rounds. I use to have a source for the correct paper, but it's been years that I just forgot.

There's a guy who's first name means 'a small cut', and who's last name rhymes with 'Tekela' who sells 'em at his site. He sells them as part of a '40 round package', but you can buy just the cleaner round paper too. We're not allowed to say his name here...

A long time ago, said individual threatened the scourge known as lawyers upon this site if he name was mentioned here ever again. It's such a silly thing now that it's almost a marketing ploy. He's the man whose name cannot be mentioned but everyone knows who he is. Although not originally intended as a marketing trick, it sure has become one. Use his name all you want on Szabo's forum.

Instead of going to "That Guy" you could probably just hunt up a local paper supply shop or even an online source for what you need. Years ago when I still lived in Cincinnati, I used a local shop for all of my colored papers, screen printing inks, et cetera. A good shop will carry literally hundreds of colors of paper in all weights and composition.

Locally-owned print shops might turn up something good as well. My business partner Dan uses a local shop that has a great selection of colored paper in stock and available to purchase by the sheet. Heck, they might even give you a few for free.

            Re: William's Cleaner Round Paper

At first the standard package of 10 arsenal-issued cartridges contained eleven percussion caps in a separate tube and one Williams patent cartridge out of the 10 cartridges. Later this amount was increased to three of the 10 and then to six by August of 1864. Originally Soldiers were instructed to use the special bullets as every tenth round fired.
Williams cartridges were made up in the same fashion as the standard .58 caliber cartridge with 60 grains of black powder, but no official documentation has ever been located indicating that the cartridges should be made up in a colored cartridge paper. Surviving examples show blue, red, and a white / off white cartridge paper used along with the standard "buff" tan cartridge paper in their production.

                Re: William's Cleaner Round Paper

Thank you everyone, I appreciate the help. I didn't know if there was a certain paper that people had found to work well like the 3m masking paper for regular rounds for instance.

Go to Office Depot. Buy blue ink in a roll on type bottle. Ink your own paper. Works great.

If you have one in your area check out a teachers supply store. The one in our area caters to the home schoolers. They usually have a pretty good selection of different colored papers for art projects. I have found paper for not only for Williams cleaners rounds but also for .69 colored wrappers.
