    Gentleman,
Does anyone know of a vendor that sells reeds to the pipes I've lost mine and my pipe is now useless, and While I'm on the subject, does anyone know a vendor who sells wood carved period pipes?

    Thanks All!

Try also Ezra Barnhouse. They sell reed stem pipes, and clay pipes as well. As stated above R. Ubben is the source for wood pipes.

        Re: Pipes

I would suggest a good source for pipe would be antique stores. If you know what you're looking for,you should be able to find Meershams as well as basic wooden pipe that are proper for the period. In,the pipe I carry when I'm on campaign is a small briar bowl with a horn stem.My mother picked it up for me at a local antique mall.It works well.
As for stems, you can aways go down to the river, take a reed, and cut it off between the different sections.People have also suggested cherry stems and applewood. The intererior is soft,so a hot poker pushed through would clear it out.All you would than need to do is let it season.Hope this helps.

I will second Randy Ubben. He is great to work with and will help you create a pipe that will be the envy of all your pards! He also makes cases for his pipes.

One of my originals has a stem made from elderberry. Not sure if it's original to the pipe or not. A few years ago I experimented with making one like this and found it to be very easy to do. The center of elderberry is nothing but pith, but it has a relatively thick and tough outer wood portion. I used a piece of hanger to ream out the pith, didn't even need to heat it.

You can always carve your own...It may be crude, no art, but functional. I have been doing that for a number of years. Sone aer better thna oterhs..Yes, I fudge bt drilling out the bowl...but when I am enlisted, a simple homemade wood pipe fits the bill... 9I've done bith one piece and two piece pipes, and the fun is watching it age and seasoning.

              Just a thought

Everyone makes occasional typos, but this post is pretty bad. If you don't read your own posts for obvious errors, why should anyone else read what you posted? Slow down a tad, too.

I bring this to your attention - and anyone who reads this - because from another member of the forum hit the alert button. This isn't me looking for typos and punctuation errors on every post in the forum - even if it would make my 8th grade English teacher proud that if I was doing such.

Slow down and reread your posts before hitting the send button.

I am wondering if anyone has good contact info for R Ubben. I sent an e-mail to what is listed on his website, but have not heard anything

A good source for clay pipes that aren't your typical "dog and pony show" pipes is the Tinder Box in NZ.He makes great pipes by hand.I bought his Pakuranga Toastie sometime ago and live it.I have smoked it almost everyday.Good little pipes that are durable and not too widly seen. And it only takes about two weeks to recieve.

                      Re: Pipes

Just an update. The reason I sent the original question is that some of the dates on his website showed 2006. Needless to say, I did not know if that was a good or current e-mail address listed on his website. The good news is that I did recieve an e-mail from R. Ubben last night. All I can say is WOW! I asked him a couple of questions with regards to style of pipes and he provided more then a enough information. I think he will be the person I go to to create my next pipe.

I did have Mr Ubben construct my latest pipe. He sent me a lot of research and worked together to create the attached. The pipe arrived in the mail on Monday and all I can say is WOW!. Never had a hand made pipe made for me, so I did not know what to expect. All I can say is that I am hoping to save up enough money for another.

                              Bill,

You can never go wrong with one of Randy's pipes. I have smoked many a brand of pipe and his always smoke the best. Not to mention his customer service is top drawer.
