Bacon Storage

So I've done some searching around and can't quite find the answer I'm looking for so I thought I would throw it out there and ask. As far as slab bacon rations, how would they be issued. As in should it be wrapped in a sort of cotton reminent peice or burlap or would they simply have handed the chunck of meat over? Also when out on the feild how well does the bacon keep in the 90+ heat and high humidity conditions of the feild? Also if you know a good cheap vendor to get some slab bacon that would be appreciated there are hundreds of them and I'm new to the campaigner side of the hobby so not much experience yet with retailers.
